Temperament
Flemish Giants are known to be quite placid and laid-back, and as a result, they are known to be docile and tolerant of considerable handling. The more often the animal is handled the better.  Some people state that males (Bucks) make better pets, especially if they have been fixed (neutered) while young.  Bucks reach sexual maturity at 6 months of age so getting your buck fixed before that age is recommended. Fixing your buck will definitely give you better chances that they will not spray, and be a calmer more relaxed pet.  Does also make great pets as well if they are fixed before reaching sexual maturity.

Each rabbit has its own individual personality, frankly, I don’t see them as any different than people. We all have different personalities, and furthermore, that’s another reason why I like the Flemish breed so much.  With their individuality, you will find all sorts of weird, wacky things that they each will or will not do.  Some like to play, be petted, messed with, carried, while others don’t.  Some are attention hogs, laid back, and very inquisitive.  Again, they are all individuals and therefore make great pets.

I have seen loving rabbits and cranky ones from both sexes.  I raised two does from birth, and one was as sweet as can be, and the other, well; I could tell that she was a bit cranky.  I later determined that her crankiness, was her own personality. Later on, she started biting with no apparent reason. I have also obtained fully grown rabbits that had never been handled, and they turned out to be some of the best, most gentle rabbits you could ever hope to find.

All of my bucks are very sweet, they don’t mind being handled, and one of them are major attention hogs. When entering the rabbitry, "Sunny" is immediately trying to get my attention so that I will mess with him…  If he could speak he would be saying “Hey, Hey, Come Here!, Mess with me”. I also have a black buck that is very skidish. He doesn't like to be touched or even looked at. Whenever anyone goes to mess with him he does his best to stay away.

I also have a sandy doe that is one of the most loving rabbits that I have.  She loves attention and being handled. At the 2010 Iowa State Fair she learned that if she put her head close to the door of the cage, everyone passing by would stop and rub her. By the second day all the other rabbits were getting pretty tired of being messed with she was still loving all the attention.

Therefore, any rabbit could make a great pet... You would only have to provide loving care and time.  Like is said in the real estate business,  "Location, Location, Location"… Well, in the Flemish giant world… Handle, handle, handle will probably yield you a great pet.
